We’re excited that you’re here! The Juice Box Yoga team wants to welcome you to what we hope will be one of the most life-changing, empowering and healing experiences of your life. If you’re a new student, this page is where you’ll learn how to make the most of your first experiences with us at Juice Box Yoga. You’ll also find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. When you’re ready for your first class, it will be important that you check out our studio etiquette and preregister for your first class. READY TO GET JUICY?
Be prepared to stretch and strengthen your mind and body alike. Most of our classes at Juice Box Yoga are designed to be mentally and physically challenging in order to develop a stronger mind-body connection and a healthier overall wellness/ well-being.
Be ready to sweat! Most of our classes are done in a heated room with the exception of our Yin class which is held in a warm room. We love to sweat! It might seem challenging at first, but eventually you will learn to appreciate how amazing you feel after class more than you will focus on how you feel during class. The hard work pays off and in the hot room the heat acts as a catalyst for the benefits you’ll receive, allowing your body to open up for safe stretching and a healthy detox. If you still find class to be challenging, please feel free to talk to anyone on our team, we have all had our first class, as has everybody else in that room around you. We know how challenging it can be but we also know how amazing you feel when you make it through another one of these hot and juicy classes.
Yoga is not a free-form gym workout. Out of the respect for our students and our teachers, please plan to be in class on time. Arriving at the studio at the time class is set to start forces us to start class late or causes an interruption to class. For our yoga classes in particular, we ask that you please be on time; we do NOT guarantee entry into class once it has started. Check out our studio etiquette page for more information.
Get yourself together: Due to the nature of our juicy classes, mats and towels are required for most classes and are available for rent and sale at the studios. Additionally, we suggest you bring water to class or purchase water at the studios.
Wear light, breathable clothing to class. In our classes, due to the heat and the sweat, we recommend that you limit clothes that will inhibit your range of motion and absorb sweat so that you are as comfortable as possible. Please also be aware that clothes can become see through when wet; wear the right clothes for hot yoga. Men typically wear shorts and women wear shorts and a sports top.We sell hot yoga attire ONLY at our studios, unless otherwise noted. Tight fitting clothing works best and provides the most privacy. Our classes are done barefoot, so plan to leave socks and shoes in the changing room.
Come to class well hydrated and on an empty stomach. The less you have to drink in class, the more your body will be able to focus on the class you’re attending. Be sure to drink plenty of water before class so you are well hydrated prior to coming to class. Like any exercise, our classes become more challenging when our bodies are focused on digestion. We suggest you give yourself two to three hours to digest your last meal before class. Avoid heavy, spicy or greasy meals before your first class, as you may find they give you trouble in our classes. With time, you’ll learn what eating and drinking habits are most beneficial for you and your practice. Also remember it is important that you provide your body with plenty of healthy fuel to sustain it, so be wise about fasting while you practice.
WONDER IF OUR CLASSES ARE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Prior experience or knowledge is not necessary. Our classes are geared towards every body. No matter how you feel, you’re never too old, too big or too small, too sick or too inflexible to take our classes. Everyone will bring a unique ‘limitation’ with them to class. For that reason, our classes are designed to be modified to be less challenging or more challenging as needed. Our goal is to work with you at the place where you are at in your fitness or in your practice. We won’t expect more of you than where you are today and we hope you will do the same, so you can be present in the moment and enjoy yourself. Your best is always enough.
Yoga is a practice. As long as you are attending class regularly, maintaining the form of the postures and working as hard as you can, your depth and strength will improve with time. We strongly discourage students from using class as a time to show off, judge others or compete. It is important that you attend each class with an open mind and are ready to work with the suggestions from our instructors. Remember, everyone has good and bad days. Be willing to work with where you are today.
Take as many classes as you can, as often as you can. Practicing class on sequential days is perfectly safe and will actually enhance your practice. The more you come, the better you will feel. The less you come, the more you’ll feel like you’re starting over. Of course, you may not feel like coming back the day after your first class ... BUT! The best way to progress and see the changes you’re looking for, is to come to class as often as possible. So keep at it!
GETTING TO CLASS
You’ll need to register online. Whether you do it from home or at the studio, you’ll be required to create an account with JBY so we can check you into classes. We suggest taking the time to register from the comfort of your home (here) so your only focus once you get to the studio is the class itself. Once you arrive at the studio, ask our staff about our new student intro specials!
Plan to arrive early. Nobody likes to be rushed. Our friendly instructors and staff will need to meet you before class to learn about any injuries or concerns you may have, as well as give you some last-minute tips and suggestions.
Make time for YOU. At JBY, we encourage you to make your class time YOU time. It is an opportunity to leave your cares outside the room — or sweat them out and forget them when you leave. We want you to simply focus on the moment when you're in the room, changing your life one drop of sweat at a time, so you can leave refreshed and better prepared to make ripples of peace in your families and communities.
REHYDRATE AFTER CLASS
Rehydrate! One of the most important things your body will need after class is hydration. Hopefully you came to class well hydrated, but even after 60-90 minutes of sweating and detoxing, your body will need more water.
Get electrolytes. Water is most important, but during the cleansing and detoxing process, you will have lost a lot of your electrolyte reserve. Avoid soda, coffee or other sugary and dehydrating drinks, and stick to things like coconut water or Ultima, we sell both. If you feel extra depleted, don't hesitate to add a little sea salt to your food or drinks today. Your body will appreciate it!
Listen to your body. It's normal to feel just about anything after class. Some days you'll be energized and others you'll just want to go to sleep; some days your appetite will seem to all but disappear and others you'll crave the strangest of things. The important thing to remember is that our classes put your body in a place to get exactly what it needs. So listen to it! If you need a nap, find a quiet dark place to rest your eyes. If you're craving that one thing you promised yourself you'd never eat again ... It may just be time to indulge yourself, just once more, before you get back to class tomorrow!
